Study Abroad Summer 2012 - Economy, Politics and Society in the Middle East: Kuwait. Interest Meeting: Tuesday, January 31, 5:30-6:30pm, ECON 16.
How do Gucci, the desert, McDonald’s, and the abaya go together?
Kuwait, a country which has imported a significant amount of its culture from the West, remains deeply religious and traditional. If you are interested in a contemporary example of the convergence of old and new, Middle East and West, then the Kuwait Global Seminar is the perfect fit for you. Vastly more modernized than Saudi Arabia, yet lengths behind Dubai in liberalness, Kuwait is an odd amalgam of culture, society, politics, economics, and history. The Global Seminar in Kuwait is a three-week program in which students have incredible opportunities to meet with the people running everything from multi-billion dollar petrochemical companies to the entire Kuwaiti economy. Rather than being conducted in a typical classroom setting, the seminar consists of daily field trips, during which students have opportunities to discuss policies, business and social issues with economists, politicians, leaders, and CEOs. Spending three weeks in Kuwait offers you the rare opportunity to study the inner-workings of an entirely unique country and the social system upon which it operates.
